Green Initiatives at NMIT: Promoting Campus Sustainability
Overview
Beyond merely being environmentally conscious, Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT) has a strong commitment to sustainability. A component of the institution's vision, which is "to build a humane society through excellence in education and health care," includes sustainable development. The campus of NMIT has been viewed as a living laboratory for sustainability, where eco-friendly conduct will eventually become more than just a concept; it will become ingrained in both staff and students' daily lives.
Utilising Rain and Sunlight: Water and Energy Management
NMIT will lessen its carbon footprint by concentrating on building its renewable energy systems on-site. In order to achieve "net-zero power bills" from renewable energy sources and other efficient systems, solar photovoltaics (PVs) collect solar radiation and transform it into electrical power. In addition to producing renewable energy, the PV systems give students the chance to participate in active, practical learning experiences.
The ecological and economic practice of rain harvesting, or rainwater capture, is also promoted by Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology. This entails collecting rainfall from roofs, storing it, and then flushing toilets with the collected water. Because the collected (and now stored) rainwater lessens the demand on the mains water supply, less groundwater is extracted.
Management of Waste and Water
Time, skill, and resources are still used by NMIT to help students learn about water and waste management. The department of civil engineering, for instance, has created programs to help students learn about water management systems and offer chances for research on sustainable technology. Another participant is Nitte University, which sponsored a Winter School on "Sustainable Waste Management for a Circular Economy" that offered chances to create innovative waste-to-value solutions. The goal of potential future events is to both develop and keep evolving in the waste management space.

One of the primary student organisations that organises activities and initiatives to foster an environmental consciousness both on and off campus is the Eco Club Prakruthi. Participating in anti-pollution demonstrations, holding a "Best out of Waste" contest, and holding a competition for drawing and painting to preserve tastes are a few instances of student involvement. To spread awareness about single-use plastic and environmental protection, students have even travelled to nearby communities.
Studies in line with the Global Goals, NMIT assists academic staff and students in coordinating their research with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.
